There’s a thief in our midst

All of the brouhaha that has followed 'Cart-Gate' has certainly brought one question in particular more sharply into focus for everyone living here at Glen Iris Lofts.

AND THAT QUESTION IS by what authority is Kit Sutherland running about investigating key finders on carts, authoring ‘community announcements’ in the name of the Glen Iris Lofts Board of Directors (in that headmaster tone like only Kit can do) summoning the Atlanta Police Department to ‘investigate’ delusions of ‘compromised security’ on GIL property, authorizing billable time by Association attorneys and, unbelievably, having the audacity to confiscate utility carts when they are in short supply and desperately needed, when she hasn’t even been elected to serve on our Board for more than three years now? And why have homeowners been left to hear nothing but crickets chirping from the leaderless void created by those they actually elected to serve on the Board amid all of this controversy? Has ‘Citizen Sutherland’ locked them in the attic like some characters out of a V.C. Andrews novel?

Apart from the poverty of respect for every voting member of this Association that such a blatant and brazen usurpation of authority on Kit's part represents; the real crime is the now obvious and complete disassembly of any genuine democratic legitimacy of our Board of Directors. What Cart-Gate has laid bare is the unsettling reality that our Board – and any homeowner representation that would have gone along with it – has been reduced to little more than ‘Kit’s Puppet Show’.

And many homeowners are rightly outraged to discover that the best they can expect from the status quo is for their voice to fall on the deaf, felt ears of a puppet Board - as their votes, wishes and concerns have been effectively separated wholesale from the real decision making process. We now realize that what we have is a total loss of accountability by the person exercising total homeowner authority – a modern-day ‘wizard behind the curtain’. And what’s even more disturbing is that she’s busy preparing to load more than $800,000 of our money onto contractor trucks over the coming year. All this authority is in the hands of a person who has such an obvious and demonstrated contempt for homeowners and their voice that she couldn’t even have been bothered to attend our recent Annual Meeting for more than a few, irritated minutes – and that’s simply unacceptable.

It is time for homeowners to stand up and put an end to the crime that we now realize we should have been much more ‘vigilant’ in watching out for - the theft of homeowner authority and the total neutering of our Board of Directors.

How ironic that the most paranoid among us as to multitude of dangers that lurk outside our gates, herself, has turned out to represent the greatest security risk facing our community and, indeed, the biggest thief of all.
