FILING YOUR HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION - DEADLINE IS APRIL 1ST
There are several homeowners here at GIL who qualify for a homestead exemption but have not filed to receive one.  You qualify for the exemption if you: own and live in your unit; your drivers' license and automobile were both issued in Fulton County; do not claim a homestead exemption on any other property.  The deadline to file is April 1st.
TO FILE ONLINE:
1. Lookup your parcel ID number, which can be found on your property record.
2. Next, you will need the appraised value for the building and land.  This information is noted on the property printable summary page - just look on the right side of the main property record page for the 'Printable Summary' link.
3. Once you have gotten the information noted above, you can complete the online application (there are instructions, should you need them).  Note: The 'Class/Strata' is 'basic' unless you qualify for one of the other classifications noted in the drop-down list; 'Tax District' is 'Atlanta'; in the 'Owner's Social Security #' field, you need only provide the last four digits of your social security number; sign the form by simply typing in your name as your signature.

4. Once you have completed the form, click the 'submit' button.

5. E-mail a scanned copy of your valid Georgia Identification card or drivers' license to: homesteadstaff@fultoncountyga.gov.
You only have to file once and it remains in effect until you move or sell your home.
If you qualify and file before April 1st, you can save about 9.4% on your total property tax bill - every year.  That's a pretty good return for no more than fifteen minutes of your time!

  1. This sounds rather serious... Shouldn't CMA step in and investigate? Don't they (CMA) have an internal audit or forensic accounting division that could audit the books?

We don't know for a fact that the allegations are true. What most of us do know -for certain- is that the Southerlin's are vindictive and have been in control of the power base of this HOA for far too long. They have certainly had an opportunity to rig and control the money & system so to speak to their own financial gain. They are certainly not hesitant to use ruthless intimidation and fear management to maintain control.... to what extent they have engaged in unethical activities - the jury is still out. However the only way to get at the root of this is to have an objective source conduct an audit & this audit would not report to the board but to the homeowners. If their is "meat on this bone" - "The Southerlins" need to be held accountable.
